Case Study: Leveraging LiDAR3D's Expertise for Accurate and Comprehensive Architectural and Engineer

Discover how LiDAR3D's meticulous attention to detail and customized deliverables enabled The August Co (TAC) to complete a complex project with precision and efficiency.

Introduction:

This case study demonstrates the value of LiDAR3D's CAD drafting services in providing accurate, comprehensive, and customized solutions for TAC, an early adopter of iOS LiDAR scanning technology. We will examine a specific project where LiDAR3D's expertise helped identify discrepancies and deliver a holistic 3D model of the project site, along with various outputs tailored to TAC's needs.

Project Overview

  • 1) Site Scanning and Ground Control Points: TAC visited the site and scanned the land plot using iOS LiDAR technology with the PolyCam app. For the best possible results for site plans and large outdoor scans, LiDAR3D recommends the Dot3D app, as it is the only app that supports AprilTags as ground control points at this time. However, other apps like PolyCam can also be used effectively, depending on the project's tolerance for measurement accuracy and the specific use case.

  • 2) Handling Discrepancies in Existing 2D Drawings: TAC submitted the scanned 3D models along with 2D drawings in both PDF and DWG formats. LiDAR3D identified discrepancies between the two file formats, a common issue with 2D technology for documenting buildings, likely caused by multiple people working on the drawings over time and not updating corresponding documents accordingly.

  • 3) Creating a Holistic 3D Model: LiDAR3D cross-referenced the scanned land plot, satellite data, photos, and existing 2D plans to produce a comprehensive 3D model of the entire project site.

  • 4) Developing the design in 3D: Sketches and other inputs turned into an updated 3D model with the level of detail and level of information required for the project.

  • 5) Customized Deliverables for TAC: LiDAR3D provided TAC with customized deliverables tailored to their requirements, including a binder with 2D drawings for building permits, a SketchUp 3D model, and a geolocated model that can be opened using Google Earth and viewed in context with surrounding buildings.

Outcomes and Lessons Learned

This case study showcases the importance of meticulous attention to detail and the benefits of embracing 3D technology like iOS LiDAR scanning. By partnering with LiDAR3D, TAC could save time and overcome challenges related to discrepancies in existing 2D drawings and obtain customized deliverables that fit seamlessly into their project workflow.

The project also highlights the advantages of using ground control points such as AprilTags and the Dot3D for iOS app to ensure accurate Apple LiDAR scans of large project sites. However, it's crucial to emphasize that other apps, such as Polycam, Scaniverse, Sitescape and the 3D scanner App can also be suitable for capturing 3D scans, depending on the use case and the project's requirements.

Conclusion

LiDAR3D's CAD drafting services and commitment to accuracy proved invaluable for TAC in completing this complex project. By identifying and resolving discrepancies, providing customized deliverables, and leveraging advanced technology, LiDAR3D enabled TAC to deliver exceptional value to their clients. This case study serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in shaping the future of the architectural and engineering industry.
